2021 Soda Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon

ABOUT DISTINGUISED VINEYARDS

We are fortunate to source grapes from some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon growers in the Napa Valley. To honor the vineyards that stand out, each year we produce the Distinguished Vineyards wines. In 2021, we chose Soda Canyon Ranch Vineyards on Atlas Peak as one of those vineyards. 

VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING

The Soda Canyon Ranch Vineyards are set high up on Atlas Peak in Napa Valley. The vineyard is on a very steep slope with rocky, red volcanic soil that gets great exposure to sunlight, yielding small berries that lead to an intense wine with a very distinct personality. The vineyard is owned by the Thornberry Family and this is one of the most unique sites from which we source grapes. The grapes were harvested on October 6th. After fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak. 

VINTAGE

The 2021 growing season will be remembered for being the second consecutive year of very dry conditions during winter and spring and for challenging weather during bloom and heat, cold, wind, and rain during flowering. This resulted in a reduction in yield and more variability on the clusters themselves. We had classic Napa Valley weather during the heart of the growing season with moderate temperatures and cool sea breezes in the afternoon and evening all summer. Early September saw a mini heat wave that pushed ripeness along, then a return to beautiful weather for the remainder of harvest. Berries were a little smaller than usual with loose clusters.  Overall, the 2021 vintage was fantastic for quality and will be regarded as a benchmark year for Napa Valley.    

TASTING NOTES

This Cabernet Sauvignon presents an array of ripe dark fruits, including tobacco, mocha, and plums. The aroma is rich, featuring these elements along with subtle hints of cedar and clove. It is a full-bodied wine with a mouthfeel dominated by rich, ripe tannins, complemented by flavors of cedar, sage, and dark chocolate. The finish lingers, coating your palate with vibrant berry and spice notes.
