ABOUT ARMILLARY

An armillary is a metal cage around a globe consisting of a spherical framework of rings representing lines of celestial longitude and latitude, as well as other astronomically important features. As the FAY and S.L.V. Estate Vineyards are the center of our world at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, a concentrated blend of the two could be considered our armillary, guiding and influencing everything we do.

VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING

ARMILLARY is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc from FAY and S.L.V. made in a bold style with notes of chocolate and sweet berries that will age well over time. Individual lots are blended early in the fermentation process to enable the flavors to marry together during the aging process. The wine is 66% from FAY and 34% from S.L.V. and was aged for 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

VINTAGE

The 2021 growing season will be remembered for being the second consecutive year of very dry conditions during winter and spring and for challenging weather during bloom and heat, cold, wind, and rain during flowering. This resulted in a reduction in yield and more variability on the clusters themselves. We had classic Napa Valley weather during the heart of the growing season with moderate temperatures and cool sea breezes in the afternoon and evening all summer. Early September saw a mini heat wave that pushed ripeness along, then a return to beautiful weather for the remainder of harvest. Berries were a little smaller than usual with loose clusters. Overall, the 2021 vintage was fantastic for quality and will be regarded as a benchmark year for Napa Valley.

TASTING NOTES

The 2021 ARMILLARY Cabernet Sauvignon Aromas of dark fruits unfold with ripe blackberries and luscious Amarena cherries, complemented by subtle hints of white pepper and a touch of coffee grounds. The palate is rich and powerful, showcasing dense dark fruit flavors that are both intense and expressive. A luxurious texture leads to a finish layered with decadent dark chocolate notes, adding depth and complexity to this bold, memorable wine.
