ABOUT ARCADIA VINEYARD

For the Roman poet Virgil, ARCADIA was celebrated as a place of pastoral simplicity, where inhabitants lived in close harmony with nature. Purchased in 1996 and named ARCADIA VINEYARD for its bucolic setting, this 128-acre parcel is located in the new Coombsville AVA in southern Napa Valley, at the foot of Mt. George. This vineyard produces Chardonnay in a style similar to classic Burgundian Chablis. From the first release with the 1998 vintage, this single-vineyard wine has become recognized for its alluring perfume, delicate fruit, vibrant minerality, and understated oak.

ABOUT WINEMAKERS SERIES

Originally crafted especially for our wine club members, the Winemaker Series allows us to select interesting lots and to create unique blends. This is like taking a walk through the vineyard, experiencing the unique characteristics that define Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars’ world-class vineyards. These wines often spend more time in barrel and offer a great juxtaposition to our classic Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars offerings.

VINEYARDS & WINEMAKING

ARCADIA VINEYARD Chardonnay

Located on a strand of gently rolling hills, ARCADIA VINEYARD has gravelly silt loam soils that were formed in part from an inland lake that existed over 125,000 years ago. The vineyard has a cool climate and clonal diversity.  This single-vineyard wine is crafted from Clone 4 and Clone 17. The wine was fermented 55% in Barrel, 32% in Stainless steel and 13% in concrete egg. The wine was aged sur lies predominantly in neutral French oak barrels. 50% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation.

Winemaker Series Cabernet Sauvignon, Lot 2

The 2018 Winemaker Series, Lot #2 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, primarily from the Pollard family vineyard in St. Helena (off Zinfandel Lane). The wine was aged 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels.

VINTAGE

The 2018 season began with productive, late season rains that translated into strong vine growth throughout the spring. Cool temperatures in late spring resulted in an extended bloom period and very good fruit-set. Except for a hot July, the summer was beautiful with temperatures neither too hot nor too cool – a true Goldilocks zone. Cool temperatures returned in September that slowed ripening and extended hang-time, resulting in very even ripening with great flavors at lower sugar levels. We completed the harvest for our Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay – and began picking our red grapes – a good month later than in 2017 (and two weeks later than normal). Overall, this was a year of exceptional fruit quality producing wines with expressive fruit character.
